Radek Štencl (born 1977) is a Czech contemporary painter who openly calls himself a “voracious observer”. He refers to his desire to absorb as many layers of life as possible. His works depict objects in their many layers, which the line connects in time and space.

Based on a painting I made back in 2005, when I lived in London and when I went through time of despair and feeling, that I am on the edge of normality and craziness. Have you been there? Then you know the the border between those two states is not so far away and thick. However, there is no point in giving up no matter the complexity of the situation. It is going to be all right.

Fulfilled dreams (Grossglockner)

100 × 150 cm
Acrylic on canvas
Radek Štencl, 2022

13th painting from the Fluid lines series.

Being born in part of Czechia not far away from beautiful and famous Adršpach-Teplice Rocks, naturally i was climbing since I was 10. My skills and love for the rocks and mountains grew over time and I was able to take on more and more difficult routes up to 8 UIAA with some  first ascent in records. Grossglockner, the highest mountain of Austrian Alps was a dream come true. Months of physical and mental preparation and finally the day of the ascent has come. We had a perfect weather just for that one day and managed to reach the top. It was on the way down in the middle of the route when some 100 meters from us a huge rock with size of London’s doubledecker loosen itself from the massif and was rushing downhill just in our path where we would be on our descent in 15 minutes. That night I had to think why so many people including myself are willing to risk their lives only to climb a mountain. My conclusion is that being so near the possibility of death gives one feeling being alive absolutely. I realized there is a better and no less challenging way to feel the life. Be a personality true to oneself. I have never went on climbing since.

8th painting from the Fluid lines series. The theme of the painting explores influence heroes of our childhood have on how we perceive the world, do what extent the cartoon person grows in our bodies and how it affects the way we see them over time. The famous Little Mole (introduced by visionary Zdeněk Miller illustrator), does it exists? Depends how you look at it. Was Littel Mole in space really? Yes, it was.

7th painting from the Fluid lines series. Manitou is everything and is everywhere, in everything and everyone, the past, the present, the future, the universe power, neutral. In Manitou indigenous native Americans believe. An example of a nation which clashed with another nation. The painting is homage to all suppressed nations in the past, present and in the future. Will we all as Homo Sapiens be suppressed by another space nation one day?

The Two Most Important Journeys in the History of Mankind

We as species made it that far. It would be impossible without reasonable fertility, which is now in jeopardy from current lifestyle and the environment. And it would be also impossible if we couldn’t tell ourselves “We know nothing”. From that moment we started to think and behave differently, expand and explore with accelerated pace. Those two aspect are closely interconnected over time and today most importantly then ever.
